New Versus Used Forklift Parts

Whether to use new or used vehicle parts as replacements is always a question and forklift parts are no exception. The issue boils down to the reliability and cost of used compared with new ones, whether they're OEM or aftermarket.

Used forklift parts are worth considering for two reasons - cost and availability. Used can cost from 50 - 60% of a brand new component. Many of these parts in good working condition are "cannibalized" from forklifts which are no longer useful for one reason or another. This is especially true for those parts which are not subjected to much wear and tear. Therefore, it's best to avoid used forklift parts which wear out easily such as lift chains, brakes, mast rollers, steering axles, water pumps, switches and other small parts. But, finding a used part in good condition can result in real savings for a warehousing or factory operation.

At times when a new part is not immediately available, a used part may be the only recourse in order to avoid work interruptions or delays. If the model of forklift you have is no longer manufactured, you'll probably find a replacement part only in a used parts shop. Another advantage of used forklift parts is that they can be purchased individually and not as part of an assembly the way many brand new parts are sold.

But how reliable are used parts? This depends, to a great extent, on the type of part itself. Components that don't usually undergo much pressure or stress may still be in good condition even after being used for some time. For those components where tolerances are of critical importance, used may not be advisable. It helps to know the history of the used forklift part and the reputation of the used parts dealer. Professional dealers of used forklift parts are a far cry from the junk yards of yore. They employ trained staff to clean the parts, inspect them and categorize them properly. Many even have a policy accepting returns after a limited period.

Many companies have established a policy of keeping an inventory of used forklift parts for emergency situations when new ones are not immediately available. Others keep the parts replaced during routine maintenance for the same reason.

If your business can afford it and you're not in a rush, then brand new forklift parts should be preferred over used. With brand new you can be sure that you're getting one that should last you for a long time. Unlike used brand new ones carry a manufacturer's warranty which protects you from any factory defects. Brand new parts also increase the re-sale value of a forklift in case you want to trade it in or sell it.

There are many instances when choosing a used part is the practical option. Although they may be a second choice, used forklift parts are worth considering.

Gasoline and Diesel Forklift Parts Include Emission Controls

Vehicles powered by internal combustion engines are blamed for contributing to air pollution; that's why emission controls have become important forklift parts. While airplanes, cars and buses bear the brunt of criticism for harmful emissions, forklifts are no less guilty. The need to control harmful emissions in forklifts becomes even more important when you consider that they are often used in enclosed workspaces. To address this problem, forklift manufacturers have developed special forklift parts to reduce the truck's emissions.

Advantages of internal combustion forklifts

In the first place, why use internal combustion forklifts at all when trucks powered by electricity are available? The main advantage of gasoline or diesel forklifts is that they produce more drive line torque at a low RPM compared with electric trucks. This makes them ideal for moving loads in excess of 15,000 lbs. which electric trucks cannot handle. Secondly, they cost less than electric forklifts (although the operating cost per hour is higher). A third advantage is the ability to operate in the rain and on difficult outdoor terrain like mud and puddles. Lastly, unlike electric trucks, you can re-fuel gasoline and diesel forklifts without having to interrupt the work.

Compliance with government regulations

Countries with strict CO emission controls like the United States, United Kingdom, Japan and countries in the European Union have regulations that forklifts must comply with. These standards generally adhere to those for cars and other internal combustion-powered vehicles. To enable gradual compliance by users, these standards become more stringent over a period of time with some requiring full compliance by 2013. Buying a forklift made in a country without emission controls will entail the addition of forklift parts that will reduce emissions if the truck is used in a country where these controls are mandatory.

Emission control mechanisms

One simple method of controlling CO emissions is by adjusting the mixture of air and fuel through frequent engine tuneups. However, to ensure the effective reduction of emissions, forklift manufacturers have developed special forklift parts using the latest technology available and incorporating them in their latest models. Among these technologies are the use of diesel particulate filters, diesel oxidation catalysts, lean NOx catalysts, NOx absorbers and selective catalytic reduction.

Essentially, these technologies focus on removing particulates by filtering the exhaust, or by causing a chemical reaction that converts pollutants into harmless gases. Many of these technologies are available today and have been installed in thousands of forklifts now in use.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Nissan have installed emission control systems in their lift trucks that have reduced emissions from 50 - 90%. The US-based Woodward Governor Company supplies emission control systems for Daewoo and Clark Material Handling Company that meet EPA and Japan emission standards. Impco Technologies of California, USA supplies Hyster and Yale forklifts with engines that comply with EPA and CARD emission standards. Conversion kits are also available to make older-model forklifts meet emission standards.

For sure, lift truck manufacturers will continue to feel the demand for forklift parts that meet the planet's increasing demand for cleaner air.

5 Types of Conveyors For Mining

Material handling system or better known as conveyor system is a crucial tool in collective mining. Having an unproductive and bungling conveyor can compromise your productivity, and this is exactly the reason why you should do your homework properly to find out which system will work and suits best for mining your needs.

Conveyor equipments come in variety of types and designs, and each has its particular purpose where it can function at its best. For aggregate mining, the most basic and important type you need is a simple and straight-forward conveyor that can move sand and gravel, crush and slag stone. For this purpose, not every type of conveyor may help you, as some systems can't just accommodate the kind of material you put in it. Here are five types of material handling system you can choose from for your collective mining needs.

Dog Leg Conveyors
This type of conveyor is arguably the most convenient type available, as they can be easily adjusted at the leg, which is primarily the reason why it's called the 'dog leg.' You can adjust its legs to different angles, making it more flexible for any surface and save you some precious time in configuring, as it's relatively easy to set-up. There are also different models for dog leg conveyors, and they come in various sizes. This tool is considered as a customary piece of equipment in the mining field.

Truss stackable conveyors
Also known as Stacking conveyors, this type of material handling equipment also transport stuff quite easily, and the best part of it is that they can be carried in one load as they can be easily and neatly stack on top of each other. All you need is a flat-bed truck to transport this conveyor from one site to another, making it very handy for multiple site mining and quarry operations. They also come in various sizes and lengths too, and its truss frame is usually reinforced, inclosing all crucial components excluding the drive. This type of conveyor also come with different features, such as support legs and folding ends.

Stackable Transfer Conveyors
Much like the truss stackable type, stackable transfer type of conveyor is made for on the road aggregate mining. They are portable, easy to stack on top of each other and fit nicely on truck beds. The only difference between the two types is that, this type doesn't include reinforced truss frames. Of course, the purpose of this type is to hold materials high and keep outstanding level of productivity, thus it simply requires minimum movement. After-all, setting up heavy equipments like this can be very time-consuming. Stackable transfers are also in variety of sizes to best fit the needs of any mining operation.

Dribble Conveyors
Dribble conveyors are non-portable conveyors, thus it has its own perks and drawbacks. This type of mining equipment comes in trays which flows and moves materials. Its most basic purpose is for bagging, packaging and sorting. Perfect for less mobile operations as it can significantly speed up the productivity.

Channel Conveyors
The function of this type is to move materials in short distances. Its design may not be suited for high level portability, but they can significantly speed up the process of moving materials in the mining site. This is one of the most affordable and helpful conveyor systems for mining available in the market today.

Metal Fabrication: What to Expect From Your Metal Fabricator

Metal fabrication is the term used to describe the process of bending, cutting, and assembling metal structures from various metal parts and pieces. The process of cutting the metal during fabrication is generally done through sawing or shearing, laser cutting or punching. The process of bending is done through press brakes. Press brakes use various dies to be able to achieve the different types of bends that are required by a project. Both the cutting and bending of the metal during fabrication are the first steps. Once each pieces of metal are cut and bent to their appropriate sizes and shapes, they are assembled together through welding.

Stamping is another process in metal fabrication that is used for large quantities of the same part. The first step is creating a stamp, or mold which is used in a stamping machine to stamp the parts out of a piece of sheet metal. This process is used for making a large quantity of the same part. It is expensive to build the mold, but once the mold is obtained, many parts can be made quickly thus decreasing the cost per part. Stamping is often used for items such as vents, panels, hinges, and much more.

While various types of metal are used in metal fabrication, steel is by far and away the most common. Steel is an alloy of primarily iron with varying amounts of carbon added, generally 0.2% to 2.1%. Carbon is the most common alloying element due to it being the lowest cost and adding desirable traits to the metal such as increased strength, malleability, and hardness depending upon the amount of carbon added. While carbon steel is extremely useful and versatile, one problem with it is that it corrodes and rusts. If that is a concern for the project, then the item must be either coated or painted for protection, or instead can be made of stainless steel for corrosion resistance. An alloy of steel, chromium and nickel creates the most common type of stainless steel fabrication which is Type 304, or "surgical steel". The alloys described above just a few of the vast array of metals that are available for use. When planning a project that involves metal fabrication, one should be able to count on their metal fabricator to recommend and obtain the best type of metal for their purpose.

Metal fabrication is an industry that is growing. There is a wide variety of fabricators and it's important to select the company that will best serve your needs. A good fabricator will be able to recommend the best metal, be able to design your project for manufacturing, and have a capable manufacturing facility in order to provide you with the best product at the best price.

How Generator Power Services Keep Systems Running Smoothly

Disaster can strike at any moment, so having access to auxiliary electricity is critical. Most days this is not a problem, but natural disasters like tornadoes or other problems like blackouts can threaten your access to necessary power services. Not surprisingly, a number of businesses will seek out a generator service to make sure that daily operations do not miss a beat during an outage. An effective system will turn on instantly once it recognizes that energy is lost, and will provide enough time for employees to save their work on their computers, and for machinery to complete the processes that they are executing. Generator power offers peace of mind to a number of people, since they do not have to worry about lost productivity due to unexpected weather problems. Yet, to maintain that peace of mind, one must be sure that their systems will kick in once electricity is lost. Consequently, businesses will find that generator power services such as scheduled maintenance are a good way to invest in backup energy resources to ensure smooth operation. The remainder of this article will focus on scheduled maintenance, and why your company needs it.

Generator power is important in keeping business processes from being interrupted, but these machines need to be looked after as with any other device. Finding an expert generator service is a process that should not be overlooked. A company that has been operational for many years will boast the experience necessary to diagnose any problem, while a company that also employs electrical, mechanical, and professional engineers will have the technical acumen to solve the problem. Yet, the best companies will take preventive measures to keep problems from ever arising.

Preventive steps taken by a generator service might include changing the oil and filter, sampling the oil for analysis, cleaning battery terminals, testing the battery charging system, and replacing fuel system filters. They might also check to make sure that components are running correctly. Areas they check will include the coolant system, hoses and belts, intake and exhaust systems, the alarm system, and even fluids to make sure that there are no leaks. Generator power services can be customized, so that a solution can be tailored to a company's budget or specific needs.

These maintenance objectives can be set to occur at scheduled intervals, so that companies will be able to easily work the cost into their budgets. In addition, no downtime will be required for systems during maintenance. Organizations will continue to keep the confidence they have on any other day that the generator is operational, and should feel confident that all safety concerns are being addressed by the generator service firm.
